Cascara Sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana)
Cascara sagrada operates as a powerful but gentle laxative and today it is one of the most common herbs for natural colon cleansing. The reason for its laxative effects is special compounds called anthraquinones.
These compounds trigger contractions in the colon which causes the urge to have a bowel movement. Cascara also makes the muscles of the colon walls stronger which in turn helps to eliminate constipation.

Chinese Rhubarb (Rheum palmatum)
Chinese rhubarb is used in traditional Chinese medicine as an herbal laxative. In addition to containing anthraquinones like senna and cascara it also contains a compound called tannins, which is thought to be helpful for diarrhea and reduce inflammation in the colon.
Psyllium (Plantago ovata)
The seeds and husk of psyllium have been used for a long time as an herbal remedy to cleanse the colon. It is found in many of the popular natural laxative products on the market today.
The seeds and husks contain a special fiber called mucilage which has the ability to absorb water in the digestive tract. This makes the stools bulkier which in turn trigger movement in the colon walls which leads to a bowel movement.
