Herbs for Natural Colon Cleansing

Herbs for Natural Colon Cleansing

Herbal colon cleansing remedies have become very popular as people are moving towards alternative medicinal practices.
There are many herbal colon cleansing recipes circulating that people have been using for years to remove fecal matter from the organ, prevent the formation of toxins, kill parasites and bacteria that are harmful to the body and promote regular bowel movements by making the colon muscles work properly.
Many of the colon cleaning remedies include herbs that also help clean the liver, promote bile productions, and prevent gas from forming.
You can either obtain the herbs you need individually and prepare your own herbal cleansing recipe, or you can often buy pre-made herbal remedy recipes for naturally cleansing the colon.
Before embarking on an herbal colon cleansing regimen, check with your physician first. Not everyone is healthy enough to do this and some medical conditions simply require too strict a diet to alter.
Colon cleansing can take up to 3 to 4 week to complete. It does not happen overnight and changing your eating habits will go a long way towards helping your body stay healthy once you have rid it of the nasty toxins.

Medicinal Herbs Used to Cleanse the Colon Naturally

Aloe leaf (Aloe vera)
Although Aloe is most commonly associated with its effectiveness for the treatment of topical concerns such as burns, skin inflammation, insect bites and stings and other minor skin manifestations it has also gained a reputation as a good herb for colon cleansing and as a natural treatment for various stomach disorders.
Take by mouth the dried aloe latex, a substance derived from the leaf, has proven to be a strong herbal laxative.
Cascara Sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana)
Cascara sagrada operates as a powerful but gentle laxative and today it is one of the most common herbs for natural colon cleansing. The reason for its laxative effects is special compounds called anthraquinones.
These compounds trigger contractions in the colon which causes the urge to have a bowel movement. Cascara also makes the muscles of the colon walls stronger which in turn helps to eliminate constipation.
Senna (Cassia acutifolia)
Another good herb used to cleanse the colon. Senna, like cascara, contains the compounds anthraquinones and works therefore in the same way.
Note: Senna should not be used for more than seven consecutive days unless under a doctor’s supervision. It should not be used to get a daily bowel movement.
Chinese Rhubarb (Rheum palmatum)
Chinese rhubarb is used in traditional Chinese medicine as an herbal laxative. In addition to containing anthraquinones like senna and cascara it also contains a compound called tannins, which is thought to be helpful for diarrhea and reduce inflammation in the colon.
Psyllium (Plantago ovata)
The seeds and husk of psyllium have been used for a long time as an herbal remedy to cleanse the colon. It is found in many of the popular natural laxative products on the market today.
The seeds and husks contain a special fiber called mucilage which has the ability to absorb water in the digestive tract. This makes the stools bulkier which in turn trigger movement in the colon walls which leads to a bowel movement.
